How do I set up automatic language detection for phone calls?
In My Translators → Set Up Agent, choose Auto Connect line and Auto-detect. Add optional language hints, choose merge-only or dial-out access, then search for a number and review the setup. Auto-detect identifies the customer’s language while your team keeps its listening language.
Step-by-step instructions
Choose whether staff or customers will call
Open My Translators → Set Up Agent. Choose Auto Connect line for staff to reach an interpreter, or Incoming number for customers to call your business. Both offer Auto-detect, but their call destinations differ.
Select Auto-detect instead of a language menu
This option identifies the customer’s language as they speak. A language menu instead asks the caller to choose with the keypad; a fixed-language setup uses the language selected in advance.
Use hints for languages you commonly hear
Open Language hints and browse or search the available options. Choose Spanish and French, for example, if those are common customer languages. Hints guide detection without preventing another supported language from being detected.
Leave hints empty for any supported language
Remove every selected hint and choose Continue without hints. You do not need to select every language in the list. Detection remains enabled when this field is empty.
Review announcements and the connection method
An Auto Connect line uses your team’s language for prompts. Choose Just connect an interpreter or Include dial-out. For an Incoming number, choose the Call announcement language and where calls ring. The opening announcement does not set the customer’s translation language.
Activate and test the configured line
Connect a phone number, review the configuration and any requirements, and complete activation when ready. Make a test call with a colleague speaking a supported customer language. Confirm you can hear the translated reply before using the line with customers.
A practical example
Your team speaks English and often receives Spanish and French conversations. Add Spanish and French as hints, or leave hints empty to detect any supported language. Enable Include dial-out if staff also need to start calls.
Common questions
Do language hints limit the languages that can be detected?
No. Hints help detection settle faster but do not restrict the conversation to only those languages.
What happens if I leave language hints empty?
TalkTool can detect any supported language. An empty field does not turn detection off.
Is Auto Connect the same as Auto-detect?
No. Auto Connect describes the staff line used to reach translation. Auto-detect describes how TalkTool identifies the customer’s language. You can use both on the same line.
Does choosing a number in search buy it?
No. Selecting an available number opens a review. Activation requires the separate confirmation step and any requirements displayed for that number.
